Green Bank Observatory

Myth: The Beech Ridge Wind Farm will somehow negatively affect the operations of the Green Bank Observatory.

Fact: The Beech Ridge Wind Farm has been designed to operate fully within the requirements governing the Green Bank Observatory, despite misinformation that has been spread to the contrary. There will be no effects whatsoever on the Observatory.

The Observatory has been notified that a portion of the Beech Ridge project is within the National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ). However, because Beech Ridge will not have any permanent, licensed, fixed transmitter within the area of the NRQZ, the project will not interfere with the operation of the Observatory in any way.

As for extraneous emissions that may come from equipment at Beech Ridge, there exists no legal standing to require coordination because of the distance and terrain shielding the Observatory. We do not believe that such emissions pose an interference problem, provided the equipment meets FCC emissions standards.
